MeiLi & Devyn’s Training

On this page we will capture all of our training adventures with these two pups. We hope you enjoy following their training adventures both the good and the setbacks that we experience along the way. I will do my best to keep this updated so you can see the progress and failures that we experience and perhaps our experiences will help you with your pups.

We gave Devyn a chance to deal with running at a new place as well this weekend. She did one run with Kristen and one run with Darryl. we did not film the run with Kristen, bad dad, but got this one. Yes, she was distracted and struggled but she worked it out and managed a Q on this run. Baby steps as we continue to work on her controlling those emotions and letting us be in charge of safety.

Meili got to do a little SpeedWay at SCAT this weekend. This would be her first time running in a totally new place to her. I was extremely pleased how she handled the environment. We did not get a video of her best run but this one was pretty nice as well. The other Slingshot run she actaully got the triple multiplier for 87 points.

MeiLi and Kristen played league again today. They had a lot of fun with it. I wish I could have gone but it was not to be. Here are the videos of their runs.

Today was our regular weekly class training. It was a fun course with a few handler options along the way. MeiLi struggled a bit with one turn the first run but was a pretty good pup overall. I like the progress on commitment to obstacles. She struggled a bit with the weaves on the last run but I think that was just thinking through the upcoming challenge on the course.

Working on our weaves at home is so much fun. I love the effort she puts into her work. I am super happy with her progress and will continue to challenge her skills to increase her understanding of the weaves from anywhere regardless of what I am doing.

Here we are doing a little training with Devyn on the teeter and weaves. I am hearing that Devyn will not weave in her private classes and that it is assumed that she does not know how to weave. That is simple not the case she just cannot weave when she is above her mental threshold to think. She needs to gain the confidence to do things in public and to trust that her person has the world under control.

This was my time to play the senior league version of this week’s course. This was so much fun and MeiLi was on FIRE from the start. I enjoyed getting to try some various handling and learning what worked for the blue dog.

Another great day for league with MeiLi and Kristen. It is really great seeing this two learning to run together and become a solid team. I am very excited to see MeiLi working through the tough parts of the course and being excited to offer Kristen behaviors to try to please. That focus on the handler is so important for this pup.

This was a super tough course that Betsi gave us to run this week. We were certainly testing our skills as a team. I was thrilled to get a nice lead out from the table, a piece of equipment, we train very little. She was responsive to my cues, and handling and I am very proud of the results during this class.

Today I judged league for the club and so I got to run MeiLi for a change. It was a lot of fun and I wish I could continue to do so. But it is not to be. She was super happy to have me there to run her on this day. It has been fun judging some of the league days and I am sad that this is the last time I will be able to do so. I am very sad that this is the only time I will get to run my dog in League. Oh well, she will do well with Kristen.

Well not all training sessions will go the way you want. On this day I was not in a great frame of mind to start class. But we did show up. MeiLi could feel I was a bit stressed, and it showed in her work. She struggled with things she is normally pretty comfortable with like the teeter. Oh well I am glad we went and I felt better leaving than I did when I arrived. Love training my pups.

Today we had a rough start to class but once she got going, she did very well. The start line frustration needs to be worked through as she is going to be very fast. I want to teach her all the skills we will need for me to run her years from now when I am going to be much older.

Trying to learn some more difficult weave pole entries. This should help us at trials with MeiLi being able to go out and find the weaves and also learning to control her body to collect for entries.

The first run started out rough, but I was extremely happy with the weave pole entry since that has been our focus at home. I tried using a toy on the second run. I am not so sure that helped her focus at all. Once she got past the start line issues it went fairly well. I ended the run early while I had her head. It was a good learning experience for me.
